With this victory, Owi/Butet is not only qualified to the round of 16 but also changed the record of both pairs to 4-1. Owi/Butet joined Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto who previously secured a ticket to the round of 16 in the previous match by defeating Robert Blair/Imogen Bankier (SCO) 21-19, 19-21, 23-21.
The match between Tontowi / Liliyana Natsir against Fuchs / Michels is the last match played at the stadium. Even though the match was held late at night, it still attracted visitors at Istora Senayan. Supporters' chanting was rumbling for the Indonesian mixed doubles pair. The crowds were getting even more boisterous when Fuchs disputed the line judge in the third game after Fuchs thought Tontowi's return on the right side of the court was out.
"In my opinion, protesting the line judge is not uncommon, we ourselves were also given unfair decisions twice in during the match. Two shots were considered out. When doing service, he raised his arm but no fault, while we did the same briefly but given fault right away. They seemed to be upset after the match was over. They should have been fair, when the match is over, it is over," Liliyana said.
"This is surely a game changer, although it is only one point. After the incident, our rhythm changed," said Fuchs who couldn't hide his annoyance.
Meanwhile, commenting on the tough game, Tontowi/Liliyana admits that there are lessons to learn. According ti Liliyana, by playing rubber in the first round, they can adjust well with the atmosphere and be able to overcome critical moments.
"This is the first match, so I was a bit surprised with the crowds' euphoria. We wanted to play the best we could at home but it turned out to be no as we had been expected. Hopefully we can play better instead of being under pressure," Tontowi stated.
